Hello! Thanks for coming here.
I live in London and direct & produce comedy shows and teach stand up comedy (and sometimes still perform).
Recent work
Directing – shows I’ve directed have won the Best Newcomer Prize at the Edinburgh Fringe (2022 – Grl, Ltnx, Def by Lara Ricote), have won the Main Prize at the Leicester Comedy festival (2023 – “Spoilers”, Stuart Goldsmith), and been turned into major BAFTA winning BBC shows (2024 – “Juice”, Mawaan Rizwan).
Outside Eye – I work extensively as an Outside Eye on shows. In 2024 I’ve worked on sets for Live at The Apollo (Stuart Goldsmith), tour shows (Grace Campbell, Sukh Ojla, Viggo Venn and more) and multiple Edinburgh Fringe award nominated and winning shows (including shows by Abby Wambaugh, Marjolein Robertson, Raul Kohli, Kate Cheka and more). I’ve also worked on the development of several plays, advised on a BBC Radio 4 show and on the scripts for a Netflix show.
Dramaturgy – I was the dramaturg on Sky Comedy Rep 2022/23. An eight month collaboration between Sky Comedy and the Birmingham Rep to help 8 new writers create and then have staged 8 new comedy plays. I am the Dramaturg/Creative Lead on the Victoria Wood Prize, the world’s largest playwriting prize for comedy.
Teaching – In the past 2 years alumni of my courses have won Britain’s Got Talent, So You Think You’re Funny (with 10 getting to the semi-finals), won the NATYs and been finalists in Funny Women, the Musical Comedy Awards, British Comedian of the Year, the Chortle Student award, the BBC New Comedian of the Year (with 4 getting to the semi-finals) and won King Gong.
Production – In the past 18 months I produced 3 benefit shows for Choose Love with performers including Nish Kumar, Elif Shafak, Bridget Christie and David Baddiel.
I’m also one of the co-founders and co-owners of the Bill Murray comedy venue in Islington
Thanks,
Dec
I hadn't ever worked with a director and was so lucky to have Dec as my first one. He really takes care of your ideas and he pushes for the things that matter to you. Talking to him about my hour (which I was lucky enough to do for about a year) gave it so much depth and all the changes it went through made me end up making something I was really proud of. He asks all of the questions that you need to focus your ideas, and on top of that he's very funny, caring, kind and very fun to play with. Overall, a really big recommendation from me. Thank you Dec x1000
“This course is great – do it! Dec’s friendly, relaxed but professional approach gets the best out of everyone & makes it so much fun to learn the basics of stand up. He brings knowledge, enthusiasm and experience to his teaching and covers everything from writing techniques to booking gigs in an accessible and engaging way. I learned loads, laughed a lot and met some great people while doing it.”
“Working with Dec was a really positive experience. He has supported me with advice on the structure and content of my shows but has also been invaluable with the emotional support that is needed with creating a new show. He is one of the most genuine people I’ve met in the comedy world and is totally invested in both you and what you’re trying to create. He’s a wonderful person to have in your corner.”
“Dec is the perfect balance of honest and supportive. He lets you steer the show creatively whilst letting you find the structure. He is skilled in knowing how to make a show bullet proof”
“Dec is a genius!! So incredibly generous, knowledgeable and nurturing. He helps you find your voice and creates a very encouraging atmosphere to try stuff out.. Highly recommend!”
Working with Dec Munro was one of the best things I ever did for my comedy career. He will see through your bullshit, he will be blunt and honest and he will make you into the best version of yourself. I am never funnier or more productive than when I’m in the company of Dec
